QR Code Error Correction Explained: L, M, Q or H?

Quick answer: QR code error correction is extra data that lets a code scan even if part of it is dirty, damaged or covered. There are four levels: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%) and H (30%). Use M for most codes, Q for outdoor or rough surfaces, and H when you add a logo.

In the PAYATE QR Code Generator you’ll find an “Error correction” option under Design & colors. This short guide explains what it does and which level to pick.

How error correction works

QR codes use Reed–Solomon error correction — the same math used on CDs and in satellite communication. The code stores your data plus recovery information. If some squares can’t be read, the scanner uses the recovery data to rebuild them.

The four levels

LevelRecovers up toBest for
L — Low~7%Screens, clean documents, very long content
M — Medium~15%Most printed codes (default)
Q — Quartile~25%Outdoor signs, packaging, industrial labels
H — High~30%Codes with a logo, harsh environments

The trade-off: size vs strength

Higher error correction adds more modules (squares). For the same content, an H code is denser than an L code, so each square is smaller at the same print size. That means:

  • Higher level → more robust, but print it a little larger.
  • Lower level → simpler, bigger squares, but less tolerant to damage.

For long content (like a detailed vCard) on a small business card, Medium is often the best balance.

Which level should you choose?

  • Website link on a flyer: Medium.
  • Code with your logo: High (PAYATE QR selects it automatically when you upload a logo).
  • Sticker on a machine, bottle or outdoor sign: Quartile or High.
  • Code shown only on screens: Low or Medium.

Error correction is not a substitute for good printing

Even High error correction can’t save a code that is too small, low-contrast, blurry or missing its quiet zone. Follow the QR code size guide and design tips, and test with two phones.
